On September 18, 2003, Hurricane Isabel slammed into the Outer Banks of NC packing 105 mile winds with higher gusts. Her destructive forces were felt far west and north of here, but this is where she first checked in, making landfall around noon between Ocracoke Inlet and Portsmouth Island. The village of Hatteras, NC was in the right front quadrant and took one of the hardest hits known to the area in modern times. As a result of the storm surge and relentless waves, a new inlet was cut through the barrier island between Hatteras village and Buxton. It has been dubbed "Isabel Inlet". The wrath of the winds, storm surge and ocean overwash demolished homes along the oceanfront throughout the Outer Banks from Ocracoke north through Kitty Hawk, NC. Below are links to photos that I have taken myself chronicling the events from September 15th through and after the storm. The link to the Isabel Chronicles is a personal account of the events of those days through the eyes of a native Outer Banker as we strived to get ready to meet Isabel.
