A second new inlet was also cut between the ferry dock and the "point" at Hatteras Inlet. There was no highway here before, previously accessible by beach vehicle only.

Hatteras Island was cut in two by the storm surge and relentless pounding of high waves for hours. The village of Hatteras is now cut off from the rest of Hatteras Island by this new inlet dubbed "Isabel Inlet". Hatteras, being in the right front quadrant of the storm took the worst hit. On our overflight I could see no real significant damage to the village of Ocracoke so I did not include more pics from there at this time.

This before and after satellite compiled by NOAA shows the land area cut in two by Isabel's fury.
These graphs show that the hardest winds were in the right front quadrant which crossed right over Hatteras village.
